Over a million people a year use the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal to find their way to the Toronto Islands. However, the terminal’s location makes finding the ferry an adventure in itself. To eliminate the confusion, KPMB and West8 sought the help of Field Trip & Co and signage consultant Kristina Ljubanovic. Our concept for the terminal’s brand identity and its wayfinding problem borrows from a familiar language of the water: the Nautical Alphabet. By artistically translating the strong, bold and recognizable colours and flags into a new typeface and visual scheme, we were able to solve the issue in an appropriately joyful way.
